Small World Initiative training workshop for new partners at National University Costa Mesa campus

June 2, 2015 to June 6, 2015
The Small World Initiative originated in Yale's Center for Scientific Learning. It offers a new opportunity to conduct independent undergraduate lab research at the freshman/sophomore levels. It integrates a common research project with core biology concepts to create four distinct introductory courses (Biology for non-majors, Biology for majors, Microbiology, and Cellular and Molecular Biology). The lab course can be used as a stand-alone lab or in concert with a lecture course. The first cohort of implementers was trained in 2013. Since that time, over 50 faculty have been trained and have begun to implement this innovative lab.A symposium will be held at this year's ASM-CUE conference about SWI. This year's training workshop will take place at National University Costa Mesa campus in Orange County, CA, June 2-6, 2015 (just after ASM-CUE). The workshop is hands-on and will train participants…See More

Load credit for mentoring undergraduate research

One of the issues discussed at the Wisconsin regional workshop yesterday was whether there are "best practices" for including research mentoring in faculty loads. Some of the models described include:Students take a research class for credit, instructor of record may not be supervising the students in the class (this class may rotate among faculty, so it is included in load only occasionally)Students take a research class where they all work on a project with the instructor of recordFaculty "bank" credits for mentoring students, get course release when they reach a thresholdNo credit in teaching load - research mentoring is considered part of scholarshipWhat system is used at your institution, and how well does it work to equitably allow faculty time for research mentoring?  How does this impact the number of students who can engage in independent research activities?See More
