The PULSE Fellows view the national transformation of life science departments as necessary for retaining and advancing STEM students, for preparing students for STEM professional programs and careers, and for developing a highly scientifically literate citizenry.
This unit will provide examples of how this online workshop can be used to support Departmental and Institutional Transformation. To help catalyze this transformation the fellows have developed the PULSE Roadmap, a flexible plan for change, supported by an initial set of tools and mechanisms that assist departments as they move along the change continuum.
The PULSE fellows’ certification rubrics provide a means for departmental assessment, strategic planning models and ambassador visits help with the incorporation of Vision and Change recommendations into departmental plans, and the online workshops, toolkit, impact maps, and regional workshops assist departments with the implementation of their plans. Departments continue through the cyclic and iterative process of change by assessing the impact of the changes they made, revising their strategic plan, setting new goals, and implementing new activities to meet those goals, thus moving the department from awareness, to action, to growth and commitment, until the Vision and Change recommendations are fully integrated and supported at the departmental level. The certification rubrics and participation in national conferences provide recognition to departments that have undergone transformation and allows them to serve as national models for change.
