We are working with LSU (our local 4-yr institution) to provide undergraduate research experience. LSU has an HHMI Professor's grant that provides $3,000 to the student and an LSU research mentor. The student works in the lab during the summer. We are in our 4th year and the program is fantastic! Our faculty don't have to do anything. We have one faculty member who is the undergraduate research liasion and keeps track of what the students are doing.
Kristiann, thanks for your reply! Release time is always an issue unless we get a grant(s).
David - couple of ideas - Do you have an internship department that might be able to help foster relationships with university partners to allow community college students the opportunity to do research in these labs?
Does your institution have release time to allow you time to work on special projects?
How can faculty foster more undergraduate research experiences at community colleges/PUI's, especially with limited resources and heavy teaching demands?
If you are an undergraduate life science educator, department chair, or administrator, we invite you to join PULSE and make your department a model of Vision and Change in undergraduate life science education!
